Former Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Nathan Peterman has signed a futures contract with the Oakland Raiders after joining the team’s practice squad in December.
The Raiders announced Peterman as one of their 10 reserve/future signings Tuesday.
Buffalo selected the 24-year-old University of Pittsburgh product in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He was an unmitigated disaster for the Bills, completing 52.3 percent of his throws for 548 yards with three touchdowns and 12 interceptions in eight games (four starts).
Peterman was released by the Bills in November.
Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said when the Raiders signed him to the practice squad last month that he hoped the fresh start would lead to different results.
“Hopefully, we can take him into the offseason program,” Gruden told reporters. “See if we can restart him and get him going.”
Derek Carr is under contract through 2022 and seemingly entrenched as the team’s starter despite throwing just 19 touchdown passes in 16 games in 2018. Backup AJ McCarron is also under contract for 2019, but cutting him wouldn’t leave any dead-cap money, per Spotrac.
So it’s possible the Raiders could move on from McCarron and let Peterman serve as their No. 2 QB next season. His track record suggests that’s a risky move, though.
